A Good Photo Of Grace

Grace the gerbilFor some reason, I have a horrible time getting good pictures of Grace & Tori.

The other night, though, I got a really nice picture of Grace, so I thought I would share. :)

How Mike's Doing One Week After Surgery

As you can see in the video of Mike & Toby below, Mike is doing great one week after surgery.

His fur hasn’t completely grown back over his belly, but he’s healing nicely. And, as you can see, he’s very busy and active. :)

Fun Gerbil Video

These are not my gerbils. This is just a video I stumbled across on YouTube. It’s a nice glimpse into the busy nature and charming personality of gerbils, though, isn’t it? :)

Featured Shelter Gerbil: Costa

Costa the gerbilUPDATE: Costa has been adopted!

The current Featured Shelter Gerbil is Costa, one of three tankmates at Life Long Tails in Cheektowaga, New York.

Costa is six months old and loves to bury his food dish and chew cardboard tubes and Kleenex boxes.

Costa’s owner gave him and his tankmates up, because they were moving to a new home and couldn’t have gerbils there.

2009 Midwest Gerbil Show

Announcing a gerbil show winnerThe 2009 American Gerbil Society Midwest Gerbil Show will be in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Country Inn & Suites this year.

Gerbil shows are like dog shows, except with smaller competitors. ;)

AGS members’ gerbils compete for Best In Show and are judged according to American Gerbil Society standards. Some of the things judges look for are body type, temperament, color, shape of tail tuft, and overall health.

In addition to the competition, you can expect to find a few Halloween-themed activities, because this year’s show is on October 31st. Even if you are not an AGS member and won’t show any gerbils, there should be plenty to do: look at or adopt some of the gerbils at the show, learn more about the best way to care for your gerbils, create homemade toys for your gerbils, and more.

You can learn more about the show on the Midwest Gerbil Show page.

I will be at the show, along with most -- if not all -- of the Twin Squeaks Gerbils. Hope to see you there!

My Nephew And The Gerbils

my nephew and the gerbilsMy almost-two-year-old nephew was here a couple weekends ago, and he gravitated toward the gerbils tanks immediately.

What was most exciting, though, was that when he saw them, he pointed and said, “Grrr-bull.” He wasn't saying the names of any animals yet when he last visited me in the fall, so I was shocked that he knew the word gerbil! He said “grrr-bull” several more times that day while watching the gerbils. He also enjoyed crumpling up paper plates to give to Hallie.

My brother probably doesn’t like it, but it looks like my nephew has something in common with me. We have a little gerbil fan, I think! :)

Gerbils In The News: Gerbils & other rodents can smell illness

Gerbil news iconI stumbled an article this morning about a study that showed that many rodents, including gerbils, have the ability to smell illness.

2009 New England Gerbil Show In Four Weeks!

Herman at the 2008 New England Gerbil Show
AGS judges Donna and Libby announce our gerbil Herman’s 1st Place ribbon at last year’s New England Gerbil Show
It’s only four weeks until the 2009 New England Gerbil Show in Bedford, Massachusetts.

Gerbils will compete in the show, which is similar to a dog show, except for gerbils. American Gerbil Society members’ gerbils will be judged according to the American Gerbil Society standards for build, color, tail tuft, facial features, and temperament.

There will also be many gerbil-related activities, including a book signing by Holly Robinson, author of The Gerbil Farmer’s Daughter. Other activities include the Pet Class with a mock gerbil show.

I will be at the show, along with many of the Twin Squeaks Gerbils, including Herman, Sebastian, Hallie, Mike & Toby, Gobo, and Marco & Polo.

For more information, please visit the New England Show page. Also, if you plan to go to the show, please note that quarantine began on Saturday, May 2nd.

One last note: If the New England Show is too far away for you to attend, stay tuned. I’ll post details soon about the 2009 Midwest Gerbil Show, which will be in Lincoln, Nebraska this fall!
