He is so CUTE!!! Just a quick question; HOW do you get such nice pictures of your gerbils? Do you take them through the glass? If so, then you must keep them VERY clean! I've never noticed a spot. If you take them actually IN the cage, doesn't it scare your gerbs when you stick the camera in? Just wondering... Might like to try out for POTW one of these days!
I do take my pictures through the glass. :) It lets them continue doing their normal gerbil activities while I photograph them.
I also use the flash, because it provides enough light to have a really fast shutter speed since gerbils are in constant motion! (I've had to experiment with the flash settings, though, so I don't get too much flash and distort their coloring... or blow out the photo.)
I wish I could say that my tanks were all sparkling clean, but there are plenty of times when I think I have the perfect photo, only to discover a fingerprint smudge on the glass... or that the gerbils used their wheel as a toilet before running in the wheel and splattering the side of the tank. ;-D But I do my best to keep the tanks as clean as I can!
Oh, and the trick to shooting through the glass is to shoot at an angle so you don't get reflections from the flash in the photo.
Also, if your camera has a macro mode, use that. At least on the Canon digital cameras I've had, macro mode has really made for the best gerbil photos. :)
I was going to mention that I looked at your blog last night and noticed what fantastic photographs you take! They don't look like snapshots at all. I can see that you have an eye for composition and were blessed with artistic talent. Is photography a serious hobby of yours?
It would be great if you send a photo for POTW. I'd love to see your gerbils. :)
HI I am wondering if you have any hamster babies available or know a breeder that does? I was going to send you a e-mail but my microsoft is not working. I am interested in getting a hamster but do not want to buy one from the pet store, as I do in-home-childcare and need one that has been handled often or that is young enough to tame. my e-mail adress is cleidlein@msn.com. Thank you so very much for your time! Carey
Sorry, but I don't (and have never) had hamsters, and I don't breed. I have pet gerbils.
I'd suggest, though, that you look for a directory of hamster breeders online.
Something else to consider is checking Petfinder for a rescue group, such as Small Angels Rescue. As opposed to shelters, rescues often foster their animals to temporary homes, where they get plenty of handling and attention while awaiting adoption. Plus, it would let you do something good for a pet in need.
If you decide that you would prefer a pair of gerbils instead of hamsters, check the American Gerbil Society’s site for help finding gerbils. (You really should adopt gerbils in pairs. While most hamsters are solitary, gerbils do best with a buddy.)
Hi Kylee! I just now saw that you replied to my comment and I'm very thrilled that you stopped by my blog! I'm glad you like my pictures. I love photography and yes, it is a big hobby of mine! I might like to do it professionally someday, but at this point I just don't have a good enough camera.
BTW, Black Pearl, the gerbil you just posted on Photo of the Week the other day, is my sister's gerbil! She was SO excited you posted about her! You've just made one little girl very happy... :)
If I can ever get a really good photo of my gerbil, I'll try out for POTW! Looking forward to it!

You've probably already seen this, but there's a tip about photographing gerbils.

Thanks for the tips I was just going to ask the same question.
He is SO CUTE! I started taking videos of my gerbils, because it was too hard to take pictures XD

This is so cute! I have two gerbils and they are always acting like goofballs :)
gobo is so cute!!!!!
what is POTW ?
Hi Anonymous,
Thanks! I think Gobo's adorable, but I'm very biased. ;-D
POTW stands for "Picture of the Week."
Each week, we try to post a different gerbil photo. We get more photos than we can possibly put online, but we do our best to post as many as we can!
You can find the Twin Squeaks Gerbil Picture of the Week at www.twinsqueaks.com/potw.html.
