Mike Is In Surgery
Mike is in surgery this morning for a scent gland tumor that appeared and grew very rapidly.
It's troubling that it grew so quickly, but I have an excellent vet, and the prognosis is very good for gerbils who have surgery to remove their scent glands due to tumors.
I'm sick today, so I guess Mike and I will be recovering together this afternoon.
Right now, I'm waiting for the call from Dr. Katie to let me know that Mike is done with surgery, out of recovery, and ready to come home. I'll post an update when Mike and Toby are home, and I know how Mike did.
All thoughts and prayers for Mike would be appreciated.

Ooooh, poor little guy! We're praying for him to recover smoothly!
you must have a wonderful vet. I too will say a prayer for you and all your gerbie friends.
Thank you, Sharon and Linette. I just posted an update on Mike. He's doing great tonight. :)
My vet is wonderful. She's experienced with small animals, very knowledgeable about gerbils, and very comfortable handling them, too.
My gerbils have all seemed very comfortable with her when she's examined them, and she's so good with them.
Liza was treated by both Dr. Katie and Dr. Brad (both in the same office), and after Liza's death, they sent a lovely sympathy card with photos of exotic pets on the card. It was very thoughtful and another one of the many reasons I love this vets office.
I know how hard it can be to find vets who are knowledgeable about rodents, so I feel very fortunate to have found two great vets in the same office. :)
I have only had my gerbil family for a year and have been blessed w/heathly gerbs. Im sure one day I will need a vet. Any advice/tips
Hi Linette,
Start by searching the Yellow Pages for vets who specifically list that they treat gerbils, hamsters, rats, etc. If you can't find someone who specifically lists small rodents, look for a vet who advertises treating guinea pigs, ferrets, or birds.
My first vet didn't have a lot of experience with gerbils, but he had quite a bit of experience with rats and guinea pigs, as well as with small zoo animals (he treated bats, prairie dogs, sea otters, etc. for our local zoo). He took great care of my gerbils, and I think the world of him.
The reason I go to a different office now is because once I called but couldn't get an appointment with him (he wouldn't be back in the office for three days). I asked his office if they could recommend a vet who would be good at treating gerbils. They didn't hesitate at all before recommending my current vets' office. My new vets specialize in exotics. They are so comfortable handling my gerbils and know a lot. I have been very impressed.
I wouldn't have known about them, though, if I hadn't asked a different vet's office for a recommendation!
I think most vet's offices will be more than willing to refer you to someone more knowledgeable with rodents if they know of someone. :)
You might try calling around to see if various vets in your area have experience treating gerbils or if they could recommend a vet who would be good to take your gerbils to.
Best of luck! Believe me, I know how difficult it can be to find a good vet. I'd start looking now, before you need to see a vet. When a gerbil is sick, it's the worst time to have the stress of trying to find a competent rodent vet.
Good luck! I hope you can find a great vet in your area, too! :)
thanks for the advice!
