Hallie and Liza Take a Sandbath
People always seem to enjoy seeing how much fun gerbils have taking a sandbath.

I just got my first pair of gerbils this weekend, and I gave them some chinchilla sand for a bath and they didn't roll around in it, they just sort of dug a little bit with their front paws. Does it take them a few times to get the hang of it, or do they have to be taught?

If they haven't had a sandbath before, it usually takes them a few times to figure it out. They'll probably dig in the sand a bit or nibble on it. (It won't hurt them if they eat some of it.)
Most gerbils will catch on to it after a few times. You can help them along, though, by sprinkling a little bit of the sand on their back while they're standing in the sand bowl. Sometimes, they'll shake the sand off their back, and that will prompt the instinct to roll in the sand.
It takes most gerbils a little while to figure it out, but once they do, they *love* rolling in the sand. :)
