I presume you must be a gerbil expert. My son has a question for you. The gerbil has plenty of toilet rolls to chew but his teeth are getting too long. What's the solution.
and only one gerbil here.

Hi truevyne,

How old is your son's gerbil? Sometimes, as they get older, gerbils don't chew enough to keep their teeth filed down.

Does the gerbil have any wooden chew blocks? You could try that or a wooden house. Often, if a gerbil's teeth are getting too long, he will eagerly gnaw on pieces of wood to get his teeth filed down.

If providing wooden toys to chew doesn't help, you'll need to take the gerbil to a vet to have the teeth trimmed. (If they get too long, eventually, the gerbil will have trouble chewing food.)

Try the wooden toys first, though. Usually, providing some harder chewing material is enough to get the teeth back to the proper length.

Also, I'm not sure how old your son is, but feel free to pass along our Gerbil Kids site if he'd like to visit a kid-friendly site about gerbils.

Good luck with with your son's gerbil. If you have any other questions, feel free to post another comment here or to email me directly. :)

Dear Twin,
Thanks for the advice. We'll get a piece of wood for him ASAP. He's three years old. I know that's getting old for a gerbil. I tried the email link to you but it didn't work.

hi twin!!! i have a gerbil, i have had him for three years now but he may be older because i got him from a person who knew nothing about him.(not even his age) i know thats bad to be doing when buying a pet, but i was lucky as he has been healthy and oh so loveable as long as i have had him. but the past two days i noticed he was not being active at all, he stumbled and shook, and didnt eat the peanuts he usually would kill for. when i looked closer, i noticed he his eyes were *bleeding* and he couldnt open them. now i know gerbils sometimes cry red tears, which he is, and i heard this is not harmful at all, but as i said, he cant open his eyes, hes shaking, mellow, and he wont eat his peanuts!!!! im so worried about him, so please help me if you can!!!!! thanks for listening,
cassie.
